Technical - How the Images Were Made

All of the images on this site, unless otherwise noted, were originally taken with film cameras.

There are 3 types of film cameras that I have used here: 35 mm, Medium Format, and Large Format.

I like large prints, and I like to have lots of detail in my prints. For that reason, most of the images were captured on medium or large format film.

The classic medium format camera is the Hasselblad. Made in Sweden, the Hasselblad and its Zeiss lenses have been the choice of professional photographers for decades. The Hasselblad produces a negative that is 6 cm by 6 cm square, roughly 5 times the area of a 35 mm negative. Image detail and tonal range are proportionately greater. Other medium format cameras have been produced by Pentax, Mamiya, Rollei, and a host of others. These other cameras vary in appearance, functionality, image format, etc., but they all share the ability to produce outstanding images.

Large format cameras are those that use sheet film, that ranges from 4X5 inches to 8 X10 and larger. These large negatives produce incredible detail and tonality, and are easily printed to very large sizes (a 3 foot by 4 foot print is grainless!). By my judgement, medium and large format negatives yield prints markedly superior to most digital systems on the market today.
