W. Stephen Cooper, a Toronto native, received his initial training in photography in the Instructional Media program at Humber College. Since graduating, Steve has been involved in many areas of visual media, including film and video production.
Steve's photographs are inspired by the subtle play of light as it moves across the surface of deserts, mountains, and other wilderness locales. The art and architecture of prehistoric Native Americans are also themes of many of his studies. Steve chooses to portray his subjects in traditional fine-grain black and white images, using a medium format camera. He believes that the medium's wide tonal range and fine detail best communicates the essence of his subjects to the viewer, and captures the spirit of remote regions and ancient peoples. Steve hand prints all of his photographs, which are then selenium toned for permanence, and archivally matted.
